Drug delivery methods are continually being researched to improve the method in which they are ingested and best utilized. Because nutritional supplements are almost always ingested orally, poor absorption of these supplements is an alarming reality. This is attributed to the gastrointestinal tract impairing proper absorption prior to excreting them as waste.

When investigating the methods best suited for the absorption of vitamins and minerals within the body, nanotechnology has recently become the leading application in modern nutrition. By creating nano-sized nutrients the amounts of absorption can be increased tremendously. However, this technology has recently started to be used in many other fields including engineering, physics and materials sciences.

Using nanotechnology for improved delivery of nutritional supplements is a growing application in the nutritional supplements industry. Any former problems seen with absorption and solubility can now be addressed with the release of liposomal encapsulation. This means that not only will nutritional supplements be more effective, they will also be easily ingestible.

Through nanotechnology, many useful benefits can be attained. Modifying problematic processes within human biology to be beneficial is finally a reality within the nutritional supplement industry. By reducing the size of the nutrients while still maintaining potency, many health benefits can be achieved.

What is Nanotechnology?

What is Nanotechnology Molecule image

Nanotechnology deals with a broad range of tools and techniques to change particles in size to between a few to hundreds of nanometers in diameter. When particles reach this size the nutritional application achieved plays off of the physicochemical and surface properties of these molecules. This burgeoning technology has proven to be a possible solution for several problems, such as making medicine or nutritional supplements more easily absorbed.

When water is alkalized, water molecules become micro-clustered to fundamentally change the size and shape of the molecules. When micro clusters are formed, they are more easily absorbed by the cells of the body. This is because the molecules are smaller, characteristically making them capable of permeating the walls of cells and allowing easy cell penetration.

Tap water is composed of approximately 12 molecule clusters, which are too large to penetrate the cell wall. When water is alkalized the microclusters hold approximately four to six molecule clusters. This makes the cell small enough to easily pass through the cell wall.

When alkaline water is formed, it makes hydration more achievable. These microclusters of water molecules can help hyper hydrate the body because they are inherently smaller. When supplements, vitamins and minerals are added to these microclusters of water molecules, they also become more absorbable by the body for a superior delivery method previously unseen.

Nano Nutrient Encapsulation

Recent technological advancements in nano nutrients have made it possible to encapsulate nano nutrients within a liposome. Liposomes are essentially a microscopic bubble that is filled with fluid that can deliver vitamins and nutrients directly to the cells within the body that need them. By suspending nano nutrients within a water substance and placing them within this liposome a superior delivery method has been created.

By altering the phospholipid walls of the liposome, scientists have been able to select specific phospholipid combinations to target the exact cells that will benefit from the nano nutrients encapsulated. Once the liposome reaches a target cell, the nano nutrients are released for immediate absorption. This technology is revolutionary because we now have the ability to target specific organs for maximum benefits.

Benefits of Encapsulation

When looking at the studies of nano nutrient encapsulation, many different benefits can be seen that favor liposomal delivery instead of traditional capsule and tablet ingestion. Throughout these studies, nano nutrient delivery has been found to not only increase the amount of absorption but enhance the effects of the nutrient. Some of these benefits are as follows.

Benefits of Encapsulation Water image

Nutrient Amplification

Nanonutrients offer an amplified effect when absorbed that isn't seen with traditional methods. Because more surface area of a given molecule is exposed to the target cell, fewer nutrients are needed for optimal effects. This process makes less nutrient amounts more effective than traditional capsule forms.

Cell Targeting

Nanoencapsulation makes targeted nutrient delivery possible. Because nutrients can be sent directly to the cells that will benefit most from them. Nanonutrients can be sent directly to the cells that need them to expedite the process of absorption. This makes effects quicker than seen with traditional ingestion methods.

Nutrient Preservation

Liposomal delivery creates a shield for the nutrients and liquid contained within the liposome itself. Traditionally, nutrients would be wasted as they travel through the body for absorption. Since the smaller liposomes are easy passed through the system, fewer nutrients are excreted as waste within the body.

Increased Antioxidant Absorption

Antioxidants are notorious for avoiding dissolution within watery substances, such as blood. When antioxidants are encapsulated with an oil based fluid, the full benefits can be achieved. Nano-encapsulated curcumin was found to decrease inflammation by 43 to 83 percent while traditional supplements showed no noticeable effect.

Benefits of Nanonutrients

Because of the aforementioned process of containing nutrients within a liposome for delivery, nano nutrients are easily ingested. More often they can be manufactured into a powder form that easily dissolves within water-based substances. This can allow for easier ingestion and utilization to benefit the body better than traditional supplements.

Easier Ingestion

Liposome-encapsulated supplements are easily dissolved within water. For this reason, they can be added to water to easily transport the vitamins and minerals inside within the body. For individuals who have difficulty swallowing capsules or tablets, nanotechnology has made ingestion of these vitamins very easy.

Enhanced Utilization

As previously stated, liposome delivered nano nutrients are utilized better than they would be in traditional supplement formats. Because the liposome protects the nutrients while passing through stomach acids, they are easily absorbed without a loss of potency. Once reaching the small intestine, nutrients are absorbed in full within the body.

Decreased Waste

Unlike traditional capsule or tablet vitamins, nutrients placed within a liposome are held until they reach their target cells. Once the nutrients are released, they are immediately used for cell repair and nourishment. This means that throughout the digestive process no nutrients are lost as a waste product.

Faster Effects

Traditional supplements have to be metabolized before they can enter the bloodstream and be utilized by the body. Nanonutrients go directly into the bloodstream through the small intestine for immediate absorption within targeted cells. This process allows the cells to utilize the nutrients with no delays for a variety of processes.

No Additives

Traditional supplements require binders, fillers and additives to complete the formation of a capsule or tablet. With liposome delivery methods, none of these byproducts have to be used to complete the manufacturing process. This means that individuals get the cleanest, most natural delivery method available.

Vitamin A

For pregnant women, the demand for vitamin A is highest during the final trimester. It's at this time that most women will suffer from vitamin A deficiency. If vitamin A intake is not sufficient during this time period, a pregnant woman may develop night blindness.

Vitamin B6

Studies have suggested that vitamin B6 supplementation greatly diminishes morning sickness symptoms. Generally, this will improve nausea but have no effect on vomiting. No signs of harm to the unborn child have been found with vitamin B6 supplementation during pregnancy.

Vitamin B12

Some research has shown that vitamin B12 deficiency during pregnancy can have detrimental effects on the mental function within infants. When a mother breastfeeds in a vitamin B12 deficiency the child can potentially develop heath issues such as developmental disorders, growth failure and anemia. Vitamin B12 is the most commonly seen deficiency within the United States.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is necessary for the production of collagen, which is essential for cartilage, tendons, bones and skin. Some researchers believe that vitamin C deficiencies within newborns can impair mental development. Vitamin C is also essential for tissue repair, wound healing, bone growth and repair and healthy skin.

Vitamin D3

It is unlikely that prenatal vitamins provide enough vitamin D to prevent preterm birth or infection. Research on vitamin D has shown that it is required for immune function, healthy cell division and bone health. Vitamin D is also necessary for the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorus.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is known to help give cells their structure. Babies grow at a very rapid rate while in the womb, meaning that cells are constantly splitting to facilitate the growth. Vitamin E supplementation can ensure that the cells are structured normally.

Folate

Folate is responsible for reducing the risk of neural tube defects within babies. Because half of all pregnancies are unplanned, women not planning to have a baby should still be supplementing folate within their diet. Serious birth defects, such as spina bifida, are more likely when folate supplementation is not present.

Calcium

Calcium is needed to ensure strong bones and teeth are built and strengthened. Calcium can also promote a healthy heart, nerves and muscles within a baby. Without calcium supplementation, your baby will have trouble developing a normal heart rhythm and blood-clotting abilities.

Iron

During pregnancy blood volume will increase at minimum 30 to 50 percent. Due to this blood volume increase, supplementing with iron is absolutely necessary. Through supplementation pregnant women can ensure the heart will not have to work harder to provide the unborn child with proper nourishment.

Biotin

The chances of biotin deficiency are greatest late in pregnancy. Biotin deficiency can cause hair loss, facial rash, numbness, tingling, depression and hallucinations. Deficiencies in biotin have also been shown to cause birth defects in babies as well.

Iodine

Iodine is essential for the development of a baby's brain and nervous system. Iodine also plays an important role in regulating the metabolism of a baby. For pregnant women, iodine is essential for regulating the thyroid gland while preventing the risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery and stillbirth.

Manganese

Manganese is responsible for proper bone and cartilage growth within babies. Studies have shown that it may also help protect cells from damage. Manganese also plays a role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, cholesterol and amino acids.

Niacin

Niacin deficiency is relatively common during pregnancy with no bias to the trimester it occurs in. The body uses niacin to turn food into energy and perform cell signaling and differentiation. Niacin may also be prescribed by your doctor to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

Pantothenic Acid

Pantothenic acid is essential for the production of hormones and cholesterol. It also is responsible for the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. As a component of CoA, pantothenic acid is necessary for many chemical reactions in cells.

Potassium

Many pregnant women experience leg cramps, often this is attributed to a lack of potassium within the body. During pregnancy blood expands at a minimum of 30 to 50 percent, meaning the body will need more potassium than usual. Low potassium may also cause chronic or severe vomiting and diarrhea.

Riboflavin

Riboflavin is essential for energy production within the body. Proper levels of riboflavin within pregnant women can promote the baby's growth, good vision and healthy skin. Riboflavin is essential for bone, muscle and nerve development.

Thiamine

Thiamine is used by the body to convert food into a fuel source for energy production. This vitamin also helps the body metabolize fats and protein. Studies on thiamine supplementation have failed to reveal evidence of harm to babies within the womb.

Zinc

Babies require zinc for proper cell growth and the production of DNA. Due to rapid cell growth, zinc is incredibly important during pregnancy. Various studies have linked zinc deficiency to low birth weights and problems during labor and delivery.

Nano Nutrient Safety Concerns

Whenever new technology begins being utilized within nutritional supplements, many will voice concerns. In response, the Food and Drug Administration began conducting their own research. The only concerns found were in the delivery of silver and metal, due to the ease of reaching toxic levels. Neither of these is contained within the NutraPre formula.

Because some individuals may still have safety concerns, the Environmental Protection Agency also began monitoring the safety of nanotechnology methods of delivering supplements. Throughout their studies, the Environmental Protection Agency has found no issues and has praised the biologists that have spearheaded this technology. It is their belief that nanotechnology will enhance the quality of health and wellness throughout the world.
