Factors That Can Result in Pregnancy Multiples
In recent years, the likelihood of having twins has risen with nearly 1 in every 67 pregnancies being a multiple birth. It's important to realize that when pregnant with twins the mother will gain more weight, require extra prenatal vitamins and need more care than with a singleton pregnancy. These certain factors increase the chance of having twins or multiples.
This is entirely dependent on the female's family history, not the male's. This is because the woman is the one that is producing the eggs. If the expecting mother is a twin or other twins have been born in the family, there is a higher chance the woman will be carrying multiples.
Age of Conception
Women that are within the 30s to 40s age range are naturally more likely to conceive multiples. While in this age range, women may release more than one egg each month. This is a result of functional changes within the ovaries.
Fertility treatments like In Vitro Fertilization, or IVF, can make the likelihood of multiples. Through the manual combination of sperm and an egg before transfer to the uterus, IVF treatment became effective during the 70s and 80s. This process involves giving the body drugs to stimulate ovulation and egg production.
Studies have shown that women who are vegan or vegetarian are less likely to have multiples than women who eat a high-fat diet. It is believed that this is a result of subtle hormonal changes caused by the diet. It is also possible that women with a higher BMI, or body mass index, have a higher chance of conceiving multiples.
